Church Street, 1890s and 2015

Looking north along Church Street from Bridge Street. At the corner of Bank Lane, on the left, are the premises of Young & Chapman, Inverness’s first department store, which subsequently moved to larger premises in Union Street. It was later bought over by Benzies.

Tollbooth Steeple, Corner of Church Street and Bridge Street, May 1927 and 2014

On the site of the medieval tollbooth is the Burgh steeple built beside the adjoining Old Court House and Jail in 1791 by William Sibbald of Edinburgh, who also designed the spires of St Andrew’s Church in Edinburgh. The buildings housing McGruther & Marshall and Margaret Macleod Ladies Outfitters are gone, and the alleyway leading to the back entrance of Gellions Hotel, which is located on Bridge Street, cannot be accessed.
